    Course Title: Fiber Arts and Design

    Course Description: a comprehensive starting point to introduce students to various fiber and craft mediums and their cultural origin. Students will also be exposed to fashion design and illustration basics.

     

    Unit Title # 1: Color Theory and Folk Art (4 weeks)
    Unit Summary:  Students are (re) introduced to color theory and Folk Art.  Students create a design that is based on color theory and folk art designs.

    Color Theory Building Blocks:   Students are exposed to the basics of color theory, and how the color wheel works.  They then apply these basics to master artworks to understand the framework of all visual art. 

    Cultural and Diversity Impact:  Students are exposed to the art and lifestyle of other cultures.  In result develop an appreciation for diversity within our society and its impact on art history and the world. 


    Developing a respect for tools and materials:

    In developing an understanding for the classroom environment and rules and through better understanding technique and process, students learn to better respect and care for the tools and materials allowing them to better work collaboratively, take risks, and assess their process of working.


    Developing Craftsmanship:

    In developing an understanding of materials and working over time, students will be able to better develop craftsmanship in their work and working habits. Through working to critique their work, and that of master artists, students will better understand what well crafted objects look like, and through working with materials over time, students will develop a better sense of that craft. 

     

    Unit Title # 2: Fiber Painting and Resist

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to fiber resist and painting, drawing inspiration from the indigenous textile art practices and artists from Asia.

     

    Visual Arts Practices:

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to textile printing and embellishment, creating their own textile print design

    Practice of Creativity:  Students learn strategies and skills that allow for creativity skills to develop and flourish.  Using inspiration boards and sketchbooks allows creative brainstorming to take place without the demand and stress of outcomes.

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to the process of fashion design, focusing on illustration and seasonal collection creation

  • 6th Grade Art

    Course Description: 6th Grade Art serves as an introductory starting point for students to understand the basic building blocks of art that will be built upon during successive art courses.  These basics consist of color theory, skill building of techniques, various elements of designs, along with exposure to various artists from different cultures.  The projects help students apply these skills, and present them in a matter that takes time and effort, while learning an appreciation and understanding of various mediums and tools.  Students will also be exposed to different artists in every unit, so they understand the impact of art on society and culture.

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to color theory and the color wheel.  Students learn the basics of how the color wheel works,  how colors are grouped and how they are used in artwork.  Students will dissect famous artworks as to why and how these theories are used.

    Unit 2:  Skill Building with Mixed Media and Color Theory

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to the artist Faith Ringgold.  Using her work as inspiration, they draw a character portrait using a grid to help with proportions.  Students then paint their portrait, and use block printing for the border that is reflective of Ringgold’s story quilts.

     

    Visual Arts Practices:  

    Art History Impact:   Students are exposed to a new artist and their impact on the timeline of art history, culture  and the world. 

    Grid Drawing Skills:   Students develop a new drawing technique called grid drawing, that allows the students to break down an object into specifically sized blocks and then draw the object according to the blocks.  This allows for proportion and accuracy.

    Unit 4: Sculptural Paper Craft and Texture Design

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to the idea of paper sculpture and the Element of Art texture.  Students create a final project combining these skills.

    Practice of Creativity:  Students learn strategies and skills that allow for creativity skills to develop and flourish.  Using guided imagery and brainstorming techniques to make creating more accessible. 

    Art History Impact:   Students are exposed to a new artist and their impact on the timeline of art history, culture  and the world.

    In developing an understanding of the classroom environment and rules and through better understanding of techniques and process, students learn to better respect and care for the tools and materials, allowing them to better work collaboratively, take risks, and assess their process of working.

    Art Investigations

    Course Description: Art Investigations is a basic skills introduction into the art world.  Students will work and refine fine motor skills through four units that overview  the art fundamentals and processes.  Students will develop drawing, cutting, coloring and painting skills through daily activities that highlight group and individual tasks and projects. 

     

     

    Unit Title 1: Introduction into the Art Room

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to art room procedures.

    In developing an understanding of the classroom environment and rules and through better understanding techniques and process, students learn to better respect and care for the tools and materials allowing them to better work collaboratively, take risks, and assess their process of working.

    Art Room routine and procedures:  Students understand routine and structure by practicing expectations on a regular basis.

     

     

    Unit 2: Colors in Art

    Unit Summary:  Students are introduced to the basics of the color wheel, then apply these skills to multiple projects that are inspired by famous artworks.

     

    Art History Impact:   Students are exposed to a new artist and their impact on the timeline of art history, culture  and the world. 

     

    Basic Drawing Skills:  Students will follow and mirror  basic drawing skill  techniques that will help develop  their fine motor skills.

     

    Color Theory:  Students will have a fundamental grasp of the color wheel and color schemes.

     

    Developing a respect for tools and materials:

    In developing an understanding for the classroom environment and rules and through better understanding techniques and process, students learn to better respect and care for the tools and materials allowing them to better work collaboratively, take risks, and assess their process of working.

     

    Developing Craftsmanship:

    In developing an understanding for material and working over time, students will be able to better develop craftsmanship in their work and working habits. Through working to critique their work, and that of master artists, students will better understand what well crafted objects look like, and through working with materials over time, students will develop a better sense of that craft. 

     

    Unit Title 3:   Shapes in Art

    Unit Summary: Students will be guided to explore circles, triangles, squares, and organic shapes through various projects that are inspired by master artworks.

    Art History Impact:   Students are exposed to a new artist and their impact on the timeline of art history, culture  and the world. 

     

    Basic Drawing Skills:  Students will follow and mirror  basic drawing skill  techniques that will help develop  their fine motor skills.

     

    Fine Motor Skills:  Through a variety of exercises implemented on a daily basis, students will refine their fine motor skills and coordination.  

     

    Developing a respect for tools and materials:

    In developing an understanding of the classroom environment and rules and through better understanding technique and process, students learn to better respect and care for the tools and materials allowing them to better work collaboratively, take risks, and assess their process of working.

     

    Developing Craftsmanship:

    In developing an understanding for material and working over time, students will be able to better develop craftsmanship in their work and working habits.     Unit Summary: Students will be guided to draw and create animal themed art projects that are inspired by master artworks.
