      • The one truly consistent finding in reading research is that reading a lot matters. Reading widely, voraciously, and independently is the primary action that can spark meaningful and lifelong learning. We start with this unit to establish reading routines in our classroom.
    • Deep Study of Character

      • Restarting a Writing Life / Narrative Writing
        People communicate through stories. This unit helps students draw on their lives, learning strategies to generate meaningful story ideas, manage pace, elaborate on important scenes, and deepen insights. This unit especially emphasizes the importance of setting goals, practicing strategically, and aiming for high productivity.
    • Tapping the Power of Nonfiction

    • Social Issues Book Clubs

    • Learn to foster a love of reading and become motivated in learning about material they care about

    • Utilize strategies before, during, and after reading to aid in the construction and enhancement of meaning

    • Respond in discussions and in writing, using personal, literal, interpretative, and evaluative stances, to works of fiction and/or non-fiction

    • Write literary responses based on choice reading novels
